HISTORY
Handball Federation of India, Rohtak (Hindi: हैंडबॉल फेडरेशन ऑफ इंडिया, रोहतक) (HFI) is the administrative and governing body for handball, beach handball, and wheelchair handball in the Republic of India.
In India, sport of handball and the Handball Federation of India (HFI) was founded by Mr. Jagat Singh Chauhan from Rohtak who was an alumnus of YMCA College of Physical Education, Madras. He was founder/father of handball, netball and throwball games in India.
HFI was formed in Rohtak, Haryana, on 10 October 1971, during a meeting held under the presidentship of Professor Dharam Singh Dhillon and in the presence of Mr. Jagat Singh Chauhan, the first HFI Secretary General, with the aim of promoting and developing handball in the country. The HFI was registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860, as amended by the Punjab Amendment Act, 1957, in Rohtak, Haryana, on 15 June 1972. The founding members of HFI were Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Vidarbha, and Uttar Pradesh.
The 1st HFI Senior Men’s and Women’s National Handball Championships took place at Sir Chhotu Ram Stadium, Rohtak, Haryana, in 1972. Haryana won the gold medal, and Andhra Pradesh secured the silver medal in the men’s competition, while Maharashtra won gold, and Haryana won silver in the women’s competition.
The 1st HFI Junior (U19) Boys’ and Girls’ National Handball Championships took place in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, in 1976. Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal won the gold and silver medals, respectively, in the boys’ competition, while Vidarbha and Punjab won the gold and silver medals in the girls’ competition.
The 1st HFI Sub-Junior (U15) Boys’ and Girls’ National Handball Championship took place in Churk, Uttar Pradesh, in 1982. Manipur and Andhra Pradesh won the gold and silver medals, respectively, in both the boys’ and girls’ competitions.
The 1st HFI Mini (U12) Boys’ and Girls’ National Handball Championships took place in Bangalore, Karnataka, in 1999. Punjab, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Odisha secured the first four positions respectively in the boys’ competition, while Manipur, Maharashtra, Punjab, and Karnataka stood in the first four positions respectively in the girls’ competition.
The 1st HFI Men’s and Women’s National Beach Handball Championship took place in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, in 2001. Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh won the gold and silver medals in the men’s competition, while Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra won the gold and silver medals in the women’s competition.
