Dr. Sarwan Singh Channy, IAS (Retd.), was a former bureaucrat who served as the President of the Handball Federation of India (HFI) from 1 February 2010 to 22 December 2013.
Biography
Dr. Sarwan Singh Channy was born on 5 May 1954. A native of Punjab, he pursued higher education with a focus on political science, graduating from Panjab University, Chandigarh. His academic journey further led him to obtain a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and a postgraduate degree in Public Administration. He is son-in-law of His Excellency Giani Zail Singh, 7th President of the Republic of India.
Dr. Channy joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1982, serving in the Punjab cadre. Over his distinguished career as a bureaucrat, he held various significant positions, showcasing his dedication to public administration and governance. He superannuated from service on 31 May 2014, retiring as Principal Secretary of the Transport Department, Government of Punjab. In September 2014, he was appointed as the Chief Information Commissioner of Punjab and served in the position till 4 May 2019.
Dr. Channy’s passion for sports administration became evident through his involvement with the Handball Federation of India (HFI). Initially, he served as the Vice President and Senior Vice President of the HFI and held the presidency of the Punjab Handball Association, demonstrating his leadership and commitment to the sport at both state and national levels.
On 1 February 2010, Dr. Channy was elected President of the Handball Federation of India, succeeding the esteemed Padma Shri Dr. Roshan Lal Anand, the longest-serving president in HFI’s history. Dr. Channy’s tenure as HFI President lasted until 22 December 2013, during which he worked tirelessly to promote and develop handball across the country. Upon the conclusion of his term, he was succeeded by Dr. M. Ramasubramani, IPS (Tamil Nadu) as HFI President.
